Imposter Syndrome Victim?

Do you feel like a victim of Imposter Syndrome? Are you thinking that any day now, you will be found out and exposed as a fraud? Or, your colleagues believe you’re more competent than you really are?

Maybe you feel your accomplishments in life are only due to good luck. If they knew deep down who you really were, they would see that you’re a fake.

You are not the only one suffering from this syndrome. It’s estimated that up 75% of the population experience this at some point in their life.

Even Albert Einstein succumbed to imposter syndrome. He said late in his life, that “the exaggerated esteem in which my life’s work is held, makes me very ill at ease. I feel compelled to think of myself as an involuntary swindler”.

Other celebrities such as Emma Watson and Neil Diamond have also struggled with Imposter Syndrome.

On the other hand, people who are swindlers and boldly claim fake qualifications. They use their charm to move up the ladder, rarely feel any self doubt.

They often have a sense of entitlement. It’s important to remember that people who are really incompetent in their positions are usually oblivious to that fact.

Imposter Syndrome Experiment

Cornell University did a series of experiments called the Dunning – Kruger effect. The study found hypothetically that people with low ability at a task overestimate their ability.

They found the opposite with people who were genuinely good at their jobs, but felt they were inadequate. The study found they were the ones to have the most self doubt and undervalue their abilities and talents.

The truth is, we all go through stages where we are neophytes or beginners at something. This can be a new job or a new situation. It’s perfectly normal to feel like you’re out of your league.

But, if I asked you to stand up and sit down and then asked you to tell me exactly how you did that. How did you will each joint, tendon and muscle in your legs to hoist you up from your chair and then lower yourself back in the chair.

If I asked you how you were able to quickly and easily manage this maneuver, you would have a hard time explaining this to me. It wasn’t a big deal, you just did it.

In the same way, people who have developed intuitive abilities in any type of work or activity, often have a hard time explaining how they did it.

Final Thoughts

So, even if you have been doing your job or profession for many years very successfully, you still would have a hard time explaining how you do it everyday, often without thinking about it.

The fact is, you have been working so long and hard at your profession or talent and developed such intuitive abilities, that you don’t realize how competent and talented you really are!
